Environmental assessments

The environmental impact assessment process under the Environment Protection Act 2019 and the Environment Protection Regulations 2020 is carried out by the Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority (NT EPA), to inform its recommendation to the minister about:

  • whether a strategic assessment should be carried out
  • whether an environmental approval should be granted or refused.

All environmental impact assessments are available on the impact assessment public register on the NT EPA website. To meet its obligations under the Act, the NT EPA carries out consultation with the community on its consultation hub on the NT EPA website.

Strategic assessments

The minister is responsible for deciding whether a strategic assessment of a strategic proposal is to be carried out, and if so, the method of environmental impact assessment. The minister’s decisions about strategic assessments are published below.
