The 23rd Australasian Weeds Conference was held from 25 - 29 August 2024 at the Convention and Exhibition centre in Brisbane. The conference featured over 150 sessions covering the latest research in a variety of weed-related topics, including remote sensing, herbicide innovations, agricultural practices, community engagement, data integration, and funding pipelines. The diversity of sessions offered attendees the chance to delve into the latest research and emerging trends in weed management.

The NT Weeds Branch was well represented with Michelle Franklin (Weed Scientist), Josh Maeer (Siam Weed Project Officer), Nathan Mills (Onshore Petroleum Weeds Officer) and Chris Brown (Regional Manager, Alice Springs) in attendance.

Michelle presented on Indigenous land managers using augmentative biocontrol to rehabilitate wetland habitats in Kakadu National Park, highlighting community led innovative biocontrol methods.

Josh presented on his conference paper “Sensing Siam”, focused on detecting Siam weed (Chromolaena odorata) using a variety of surveillance methods and technologies. Both presentations sparked significant interest and discussion among attendees.

Of particular interest to our central Australian-based staff were the many buffel grass sessions and workshops. Buffel grass poses a unique set of challenges to arid land managers across the NT, QLD, NSW, SA and WA. The discussions and insights gained from these sessions were invaluable for our team, as buffel grass management remains a critical issue in these regions. The knowledge and connections made will undoubtedly contribute to the ongoing efforts in weed management across the NT.
