Best practice regulation on display during NT Resources Week
Environmental regulators presented at Resources Week in the NT and met with delegates from the Indonesian Government Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Resources Week in the NT was a great opportunity for our neighbours to the north to learn how the Territory’s environmental regulator strikes that balance in a way that works for Territorians.
During Resources Week delegates from the Indonesian Government Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources met with our Environmental Regulation Division to learn how we regulate onshore petroleum.
The delegation was particularly interested in how we apply our proportionate, accountable, consistent, targeted and transparent (PACTT) principles across the regulatory spectrum. By committing to the PACTT principles we commit to apply these to everything we do as a regulator.
We talked about how we focus our regulatory efforts on the things that matter most to Territorians. These are often industries that undertake high risk activities, such as drilling, mining and hydraulic fracturing. We talked about how we communicate our compliance priorities in public-facing compliance plans and compliance report cards. We believe being transparent and accountable helps us build trust with Territorians and the regulated community. Our compliance report card for 2023-34 and our compliance plan for 2025 will be published on our website in early November.
The delegation was impressed to learn about the level of transparency we have with all Environment Management Plans that are assessed by the regulator under the Petroleum Act. All our decisions, environmental data, compliance reports, and information about environmental incidents are publicly available on our website and on the one-stop portal POINT.
We are grateful to Ernst & Young for facilitating the meeting and to the generosity and enthusiasm shown by the delegation. We’re excited to continue learning and sharing into the future.
The Territory’s environmental regulator is committed to applying the PACTT principles to all our work. We’re committed to being proportionate, accountable, consistent, targeted and transparent. For more information read Our purpose PDF (1.9 MB).
