Boosting NT Parks visitor and experience opportunities

Published

Parks have released the Parks Development and Framework Toolkit to help developers realise nature and cultural based opportunities on parks and reserves.

The Parks and Wildlife Commission is  dedicated to conserving the natural and cultural values of parks and reserves for public benefit and to presenting parks and reserves for high quality nature and cultural based tourism and recreation, to ensure the Territory remains a ‘must see’ and ‘must return to’ destination.

That’s why the team has developed the Development Framework and Toolkit and policy to assist potential developers with their development proposals. These documents have been developed to equip developers with the knowledge to make an informed decision regarding thier proposed development on an NT Park or Reserve.

The framework contains information about:

  • what is considered a development
  • provides an overview of NT Parks and Reserves
  • application and approvals processes
  • outlines references and resources.

The policy clearly sets out the 6 principles that are applicable to any commercial development within a Territory park and reserve.

The 6 principles are:

  • alignment with Parks’ values
  • innovation and improvement
  • diversity of operations
  • public benefit
  • merit-based consideration
  • joint management considerations.

With the increase and demand for immersive, authentic nature-based experiences and opportunities across Australia and globally, there is a great potential for the Territory to attract and keep visitors coming back for new experiences which protecting the biodiversity and conservation values of the parks estate.
