Traineeship kick starts career in fire management

Published

A traineeship is a great way to start your career with the Northern Territory Government, as Brendan Flynn from Bushfires NT will attest to. Traineeships are offered to adults as well as school students.

Brendan Flynn was employed with Bushfires NT and seeking to broaden his qualifications and experience when he commenced his two-year adult traineeship in Fire Management with Bushfires NT.

The traineeship equipped Brendan with the skills and knowledge necessary for effective fire prevention, suppression, and management. As part of his traineeship, Brendan undertook training in all aspects of fire behaviour, firefighting techniques, safety protocols, and the use of specialised equipment.

The Northern Territory saw a significant number of fires in 2023 and Brendan gained valuable experience on the fireground, working across the Top End and Barkly regions.

Brendan also learned about fire ecology, the role of controlled burns in maintaining healthy ecosystems and strategies for mitigating fire risks in different environments.

Successful completion of a traineeship can prepare individuals for careers as fire management specialists or park rangers, capable of responding to and managing fire-related emergencies in wilderness settings.

Brendan completed the program in 2023 with a Certificate IV in Conservation and Ecosystem Management, a solid foundation in fire science, practical experience and a commitment to public safety and environmental stewardship. Brendan also recently successfully completed Level 2 Logistics training. This qualifies Brendan to undertake a role in an Incident Management Team during declared operations of level 2 and 3 emergencies, such as fires, floods or cyclones.
