Department staff improve their weed hygiene awareness

Published

Recently staff from the Weed Management Branch, Bushfires NT, Environment Division and Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade  completed the National accreditation AHCBIO203 ‘Inspect and clean machinery, tools and equipment to preserve biosecurity’.

Training was undertaken at Bushfires NT headquarters in Acacia Hills. The training provided an opportunity for staff to improve their awareness and build their knowledge of biosecurity risks in the Northern Territory.

Staff were provided with practical skills and techniques to implement prior to field trips and in the field.

There was a strong emphasis on vehicle hygiene and staff were provided an in depth look at how to clean their vehicle appropriately.

Vehicles are a major spread vector and ensuring vehicles are cleaned appropriately will reduce the risk of spreading weeds and other biosecurity risks. Staff will now be able to complete a vehicle hygiene declaration prior to visiting petroleum exploration leases and pastoral properties.

Staff are shown how easily biosecurity risks can spread on vehicles.
