Honouring our heroes: unveiling the Bushfires NT memorial

Published

Last year, while attending the St Florian (Patron Saint of Firefighters) service on the Esplanade in Darwin, representing Bushfires NT at the Cenotaph, Bushfires NT staff realised the absence of recognition for Bushfires NT and our dedicated volunteer network at Bushfires NT Headquarters (HQ).

This sparked a collective determination among the team to create a special memorial at Acacia HQ. The team wanted a place where staff and volunteers could honour the service and sacrifice of all who serve our community.

After months of hard work, dedication, and collaboration the team is proud to announce the completion of the Bushfires NT memorial ‘Our Rock’. This symbol of appreciation serves as a testament to the resilience and unity of the firefighting community.

To infuse a personal touch into the memorial, the base of the rock has the bushfire flames and two rake hoes, serving as flower holders, adding a touch of natural beauty to the design. Future plans for the area are to build a wall of remembrance behind the rock that will include long and distinguished service to Bushfires NT.

This project was made possible by the collective efforts of numerous individuals each contributing skills and passion to bring the vision to life.

If you find yourself at Bushfires NT HQ, don’t forget to take a moment to visit the site to pause, reflect and show reverence to the heroes it represents.
