In an impressive demonstration of teamwork, NT Parks and Wildlife Rangers, in collaboration with personnel from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) stationed at RAAF Base Tindal in Katherine, recently embarked on a joint endeavour to service the Jatbula Trail and Southern Walks in Nitmiluk National Park ahead of their upcoming opening.

The joint operation commenced in 2022, bringing together NT Parks and Wildlife Rangers, ADF personnel and the Wing Commander of Squadron 75. Both parties expressed enthusiasm for collaborating to achieve positive community outcomes. This partnership has since expanded to encompass various scenarios where ADF personnel have the chance to join Rangers in a remarkable setting, contributing to the communities of Katherine and beyond. This initiative also offers ADF personnel a valuable respite from Tindal base as they immerse themselves in the natural environment along the Jatbula Trail and Southern Walks alongside a Ranger. Additionally, fundraisers are now being organised through the Jatbula Trail and ADF partnership to provide unique opportunities directly to Jawoyn members.

Recently, the extensive scope of work encompassed clearing and marking the entire lengths of both the Jatbula Trail and Southern Walks, in addition to meticulous preparations of all remote campgrounds, helipads, and maintenance trails situated along these routes. Parks also undertook early dry season burning in strategic areas of the trail to enhance visitor safety for the upcoming wildfire season.

The team, consisting of several seasoned Rangers alongside 38 ADF personnel, tackled these vital tasks in remote and challenging terrain. Their efforts required multiple journeys via helicopter, boat, and car to access various locations across the park.

This marks the third consecutive year of such collaborative efforts between NT Parks and Wildlife and the ADF. Both organisations are enthusiastic about continuing this successful partnership on similar projects in the future, further bolstering the maintenance and accessibility of Nitmiluk National Park's renowned trails.
