New exhibits at the Alice Springs Desert Park

Published

The Alice Springs Desert Park team is excited to share three new exhibits in the Nocturnal House. The Brush-tailed Mulgara, Inland Desert Scorpion and Barking Spider each are fascinating and a little intimidating if you were to find them in the wild.

The exhibits provide a wonderful opportunity for visitors to get up close to observe these night-active creatures in action from behind glass. This also provides unique curriculum opportunities for school students to build awareness of conservation, desert wildlife and adaption.

Brush-tailed Mulgara

Following a successful breeding program of the Brush-tailed Mulgara, you can now come and see these cute yet ferocious little dasyurids in action in the Nocturnal House.

Inland Desert Scorpion

These shy arachnids are more fascinating than frightening and create deep winding burrows, or chambers. Learn about these night crawlers in our Nocturnal Adventures talk at 2.30pm daily to see their blue fluoresce with the help of an ultraviolent torch.

Barking Spider

In March, we will have something special for those curious about our eight-legged species, with our female Barking Spider on exhibit again! Barking Spiders can grow as large as a human hand and live up to 20 years! Their hairiness also has a function which traps air bubbles during floods to keep them afloat. Overcome your fear of spiders and view our own Barking Spider from behind the glass enclosure.
