Volunteering at Watarrka National Park, the place to be!

Published

Volunteering at Watarrka National Park gives you a special opportunity to see the park in a way that most visitors will never see, while also being a rewarding and worthwhile experience. Are you up for the adventure?

Located on the George Gill Range, in Matutjara Country south west of Alice Springs, Watarrka National Park offers volunteers the opportunity to work in the stunning Central Australian landscape alongside park rangers, while carrying out rewarding work that benefits the environment and visitors.

During the winter months (June - August) the park attracts visitors from all around the world with the goal of completing the world famous Kings Canyon rim walk, a 6-kilometre hike which was the highest rated trail in Australia in 2023 (AllTrails, 2023).

With a heavy focus on visitor engagement during these months, the nearby Discovery Kings Canyon Resort and Kings Creek Station will provide the entertainment after a day’s work out in the field. This is ideal for an individual or couple who are looking to experience the ‘desert lifestyle’ without compromising their social life.

Aside from the work we do to make sure visitors are safe, each day volunteering is an exciting new adventure.

Previous volunteers at Watarrka have helped maintain and contribute to the value of the park, like Karen and Marcel, who assisted rangers with our biodiversity monitoring project, going to waterholes around the park and collecting data from these locations, which are not accessible to the public.

The volunteer accommodation in Watarrka offers some of the best views on park, just outside your front door! The amenities provided for volunteers will make your stay at Watarrka a comfortable and cozy experience.
