Five days with the Water Monitoring Branch
The Water Monitoring Branch monitors groundwater and surface water across the Northern Territory, managing over 160 surface water and 580 groundwater sites.
Getting on the right track through volunteering
Parks and Wildlife volunteers come from all walks of life. Some belong to a volunteer group, and are involved with projects such as weed management, or mountain bike track maintenance. Some people volunteer as campground hosts, welcoming people to campgrounds across the Northern Territory (NT).
Wildlife crime encompasses a wide range of illegal activity from feeding wildlife up to and including poaching of wildlife for the illegal wildlife trade. The Wildlife Operations unit remains committed to protecting those that cannot speak for themselves.
As at November 2023, Siam weed is known to be present on over 130 sites across 11 properties in the Northern Territory (NT). These infestation sites extend over 3 major catchments: the Finniss, Reynolds and Daly Rivers. The current known infestations span approximately 9,500 km2 of the western Top End. The furthermost infestation now sits over 100 km from the first recorded infestation.
Safeguarding Northern Territory's water resources: the 2022-2023 Compliance and Enforcement Report
In the Northern Territory (NT), the responsible management of water resources is an ongoing commitment. The custodian of this valuable asset is the Department of Environment, Parks, and Water Security, particularly its Water Resources Division. In a bid to ensure compliance with the Water Act 1992 and Water Regulations 1992, the department has released its annual report for the fiscal year 2022-2023, providing insights into its compliance and enforcement activities PDF (7.7 MB).
Solar Car Challenge meets Be Crocwise
Preparations for the 2023 Bridgestone World Solar Car Challenge this year included a visit from a member of the Parks and Wildlife Community Engagement team and a Be Crocwise presentation. Test runs for the solar cars are held along Gunn Point Road just outside of Darwin. With many of the roadside culverts in the area leading directly into creeks and rivers our very special visitors needed to Be Crocwise and understand that they were now in croc country.
Consultation open on a proposed decision for managing short chain chlorinated paraffins
The Australian Government, through the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is inviting feedback on a proposed scheduling decision for short chain chlorinated paraffins. This decision will help to manage the environmental risks associated with these chemicals.
