Greenhouse Gas Emissions Offsets Policy

Greenhouse gas emissions offsets may be required as a last resort to compensate for emissions from a development proposal that cannot be avoided or mitigated.

The Greenhouse Gas Emissions Offsets policy and technical guidelines provide for the consistent and transparent use of greenhouse gas emissions offsets under Territory legislation. The policy will help to:

  • transition the Territory to a low carbon economy
  • support achievement of the Climate Change target of net zero emissions by 2050.

The policy and guidelines are part of the Northern Territory Offsets Framework, which applies to environmental approvals under the Environment Protection Act 2019 and other prescribed legislation.
