Water quality and quantity studies for Beetaloo Sub-basin

Water quality and quantity studies aim to understand both surface and groundwater.

To establish a baseline for surface and groundwater, it is important to understand:

  • rainfall and evaporation
  • the source, location and longevity of surface water
  • the underlying geology and which formations hold groundwater (aquifers)
  • the source, depth, movement and amount of groundwater
  • the quality of groundwater and surface water
  • how surface and groundwater interacts.

This information informs the development of hydrological models which are important tools to understand how water systems operate and manage the sustainable use of water.
